From Shelagh: “I am a volunteer with Belfast Central Mission (BCM), the organisation which runs Kirk House on the Kings Road. My mum is a resident of 'Memory Lane' and feels happy, safe and loved and that is the reason I chose to volunteer for them. The majority of the residents do not have dementia; indeed, there is a very active Residents' Forum who want to ensure that Kirk House is part of the local community.

I am helping the Residents' Forum and the Manager of Kirk House, Andrea Selby, to pursue their goal of creating an age-friendly community in the local area. Because of my mum, my hope is to ensure that at least some of the members of the community also undertake dementia awareness training. I have been trained by the Alzheimer’s Society to deliver their workshop which helps those who attend to become ‘Dementia Friends’.”
